During the past 12 months we have seen most emergencies happening to other communities around us , in the next 48 hours the Greater Vancouver Radio Group (GVRG) will be preparing for their annual Emergency Preparedness, using Amateur Radio this small Elite group within your community will be communicating with other stations as part of Amateur Radio’s field day weekend June 25th / 26th
They will be trying to get as many contacts as they did in 2004 when
they were 2nd in all CANADA, this small but effective group of Radio
Operators will operate commencing 11:00 am Pacific Time Saturday 25th
June to Sunday 26th June 11:00am.
We invite you to join us during our Emergency Preparedness Exercise. Our Field Day Exercise will take place at ----- 256th Street (North of Dewdney Trunk Rd) We
will have signs showing the Farm gate entrance where our emergency
stations will be set up. What sort of emergencies could we expect to
deal with ?
Most of our group are members of PEP Provincial Emergency Preparedness Last
December we witnessed the devastating Tusami wave that destroyed
communications and thousands of communities lost their clean water
supplies and infrstructure, this could have been even more tragic, if Canada had not been able to respond and rebuild this infrastructure before disease could take hold.
Last week Creston in California braced for an expected Tusami wave following an undersea earthquqake, British Columbia went onto an alert and two Canadian vessels headed for the first wave’s expected targets, fortunately the alert was down graded and the two HMCS vessels stood down.
However
it is likely that we may need to isolate a community in the event of a
serious infectious disease, in 2002 we saw the effect of Severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS) which affected 8,000 people and killed 774
in twenty–six countries.
We are also preparing for a possible Pandemic response to a virulent flu virus that is expected to affect 100,000 Canadians in the next 12 months. How
will we respond to these secondary emergencies when our local
infrastructure has been damaged by a Tusami wave or flood damage. In order that we can provide your communities communications in a real emergency we are preparing this weekend to Respond, please take the time to visit us during our FieldDay exercise.
