Boating and ham radio are two things that seem to go naturally together. Boats are an excellent platform to mount antennas and having all that salt water around you doesn't hurt either. VHF works particularly well when out on the ocean because the long expanses of water favour line-of-sight propagation.
I have had very good luck on HF while marine mobile, as well. It's
totally up to the captain as to what kind of antenna is mounted on the
boat. Below is a picture of my boat with a 4 element VHF Yagi beam on
a mast that I was working 2mSSB with.
The following photo is Steve VanGaalen (VE7SVG)'s boat with a 23' HF Vertical antenna attached.
There are boater nets on VHF and HF during the summer months which make
it easy to find out where a lot of ham boaters are. Steve and I have a
special flag indicating that we are ham boaters. I look forward to
working many of you from the waterways this summer.
