The Greater Vancouver Radio Group (GVRG) is a group of fun-loving and exciting amateur radio operators.
It is not quite a ham radio club in the traditional sense. There are no membership dues for example, and the group is open to all licensed amateur radio operators in the Greater Vancouver area.
Many of the members of the GVRG are members of various ham radio clubs in the area.
We don't have regular club meetings, but there is a regular weekly net and we can be found on simplex at 146.445 most evenings.
The club does not maintain any repeaters, but we make use of several of the existing ones, particularly the following:
| New Westminster repeater | 145.390 MHz - 600 | | Coquitlam, VE7MFS repeater | 145.310 MHz - 600 | | Maple Ridge, VE7RMR repeater | 146.800 MHz - 600 |
With the exception of the weekly net, we usually switch over to simplex where possible to leave the repeaters available for others.
Would you like to join the GVRG? It's simple to do. First thing you need to do is become a licensed amateur radio operator.
Several local clubs in the lower mainland run courses to prepare you for
the test. Here are links to the websites of four to get you started. Check out our links section for contact info on local clubs.
It is important to check the credentials of the examiner, since recently we have had someone in the Greater Vancouver area pretending to be an examiner, collecting money and issuing fake licenses. Most clubs have an examiner as a member of the club, and can steer you in the right direction.
Once you have your ham license, please join us on our weekly net. The net was originally started for new hams so they had a friendly place to get started, and to meet others.
We don't collect dues, and we don't keep membership lists. If you want to join our group and participate in the fun things we do, you're welcome.
